Yes, the magazine publishes through the hot months. But that’s not all that's keeping us busy.

ISHA Archives

Over the past year, we’ve been working to consolidate ISHA’s research library within an accessible space. Comprised of more than 1,200 books plus hundreds of loose magazines, the archive consists of material collected by Morten Lund, John Fry, Cathleen James and me, and was stored variously in a basement warehouse in Vermont and in a dry storeroom at my house in Colorado. In March and April the Vermont collection was packed and shipped to Colorado, where the entire archive is now shelved safely for cataloging. I refer to the library daily while fact-checking articles in Skiing History and skiinghistory.org, and researching future articles.

The archive contains some gems: manuscripts of unpublished diaries by Charley Proctor and Charlie Lord; photocopies of Western Skiing Magazine, going back to April 1947; the first post-war issues of SKI magazine, combining four regional magazines, and the first bound volume of Ski Industry Magazine, from 1949 (all published and largely edited by Bill Eldred); British and American Ski Annuals, dating back to 1936; most of Arnold Lunn’s literary output from the 1920s onward; and the first eight years of Ski Racing. We have dozens of instructional manuals, including Vivian Caulfeild’s seminal Ski-ing Turns (1922), and hundreds of local histories and autobiographies—enough original material to keep Skiing History in fresh content for decades.

It’s dusty work but when complete, we’ll publish the catalog on the website for reference by ISHA’s writers and other researchers. –Seth Masia

Deadline for ISHA Awards 2022

Books and videos on the history of snow sports are eligible for this year’s round of ISHA Awards if published before December 31, 2022. To submit a work for consideration, drop a note to the ISHA Awards Committee (email seth@skiinghistory.org). A copy of the book or video should reach the committee before December 1.

Website Redesign

Technology changes. Two years ago we learned that Drupal 7, the platform on which ISHA runs its website, will be obsolete in 2023. Accordingly, ISHA staffers have been collaborating with our outside technical team to launch a ground-up redesign of the website, to go live this autumn. The new skiinghistory.org will incorporate all of the existing archives—more than 13,000 web pages—with vastly improved navigational tools to make finding content much easier. E-commerce functions, especially membership renewals, are streamlined and easier to use, saving time and hassle for members and staff alike. The graphic design will be fresh and dynamic. Watch for the change before the first snowfall.

Recruiting New Members

Historically, ISHA’s most productive source of growth has been through the passion of existing members, who pass the word along to their friends, family and colleagues. As thoughts turn toward the new ski season, please remember Skiing History as a gift for birthdays and holidays—and think about passing old copies of the magazine along to friends who might enjoy our stories and will want to join ISHA. To send a free sample issue to a friend, go to skiinghistory.org/send-friend-trial-membership. To send a gift membership, go to skiinghistory.org/join

Dakin, LeMaster, Rietz, Thoren, Upham and Bleiler to be honored August 21.

The Colorado Snowsports Hall of Fame has announced its Class of 2022, to be formally inducted on August 21 at the Gerald. R. Ford Amphitheater in Vail, Colorado. They are:

John Dakin

John Dakin, Sport Builder

John served as spokesman for the organizing committee of Vail’s FIS World Ski Championships in1989, 1999 and 2015. He told Colorado’s story with worldwide impact. His impact is befitting recognition in the Colorado Snowsports Hall of Fame.

Ron LeMaster

Ron LeMaster, Inspirational

Over five decades, Ron brought his engineering and science acumen to the analysis of ski technique, to the benefit of skiers, ski coaches and instructors all over Colorado and the world. His writing and photographic skills, published in national magazines and in his own books, enabled a clear understanding of expert- and racing-level skiing. Colorado-born and educated, LeMaster was widely respected as a racing coach and PSIA advisor.

Paul Rietz

Peter Rietz, Sport Builder

Peter served as special counsel for the National Ski Areas Association for 13 years and was a founding member and past president of the Association of Ski Defense Attorneys, a global group networking amongst attorneys that defend ski areas. Peter was a contributing author on the last two amendments to the Colorado Ski Safety Act and a co-author of “Your Responsibility Code.” He has devoted countless volunteer hours contributing to the safety of employees and guests of ski areas.

Jeannie
Thoren

Jeannie Thoren, Sport Builder

For four decades, Jeannie has worked to perfect skis and boots to help women ski better. In 1986 she built Blizzard's first women-specific ski at the factory in Mittersill, Austria. In 2005, Dynastar/Lange hired her to perfect the Dynastar Exclusive Carve ski, honored as a Gear of the Year selection in 2006-'07. In 2009 she opened Vail’s first women's ski shop. Since 2018 Jeannie has partnered with the Steadman Philippon Research Institute’s Biomotion Lab in Vail to study the effects of ski boots in relation to ACL injury risk in women. Jeannie has elevated the skiing experience for women worldwide.

Chet Upham

Chester (Chet) Upham, Sport Builder

Chet was the owner (with family) and “hands-on” president of Loveland Ski Area for more than fifty years, and the resort remains the longest operating privately owned ski area in the state. Chet’s vision created this iconic mid-sized ski area and influenced the industry through many Loveland alumni who went on to work key jobs at other Colorado resorts. Five of his former employees are Colorado Snowsports Hall of Famers.

Gretchen
Bleiler

In addition, the Colorado Snowsports Hall of Fame is excited to welcome Gretchen Bleiler to the stage at this year’s celebration. Gretchen was inducted as an athlete in 2019 but could not make the induction ceremony. In a professional career that spanned nearly 20 years, Gretchen was the top star in snowboard halfpipe from 2002 through 2010, winning four X Games gold medals, World Superpipe Championships gold and two Vans Triple Crown titles. She dominated qualifying for the 2006 Olympics, going on to win Olympic silver. Following her Olympic medal, she used the platform to speak about her firsthand experiences with climate change around the world.

News from the New England Ski Museum, U.S. Hall of Fame and Bob Beattie Foundation.

25th Running of the Hannes Schneider Meister Cup Race

After a year’s hiatus due to Covid, the Hannes Schneider Meister Cup Race returned to Cranmore Mountain Resort in North Conway, New Hampshire, on March 4 to 6. After a Friday evening reception and dinner, New Hampshire Governor Chris Sununu led Saturday’s Opening Ceremony by honoring Cranmore owner Brian Fairbank, who would be inducted into the U.S. Ski and Snowboard Hall of Fame that evening at the OMNI Mount Washington Hotel. There followed two runs of a dual GS format team competition, a silent auction, a fashion show featuring vintage skiwear, an awards ceremony and a Sunday morning breakfast with ski history presentation—were held in superb weather and snow conditions.

Twenty-eight teams of five competed, as well as a handful of individuals whose teams did not fill up. In tribute to the 10th Mountain Division, six of those teams were active-duty or retired military teams trained in mountain operations. The race was founded in 1996 as a benefit for the New England Ski Museum. —Jeff Leich

Hall of Fame Bretton Woods Induction

The U.S. Ski & Snowboard Hall of Fame on March 5 inducted Seth Wescott, Barbara Alley Simon, Howard Peterson, Holly Flanders, Brian Fairbank and Kristean Porter. Also inducted was Sherman Poppen (deceased).

Hall of fame Sun Valley Induction

On March 26, the Hall of Fame inducted Hank Tauber, Greg Stump, Johnny Spillane, James Niehues, Kit DesLauriers, Art Clay and Ben Finley and Scott Brooksbank. Bobby Burns was also inducted.

(Photo left) At Sun Valley, Art Clay (left) and Ben Finley were inducted into the Hall of Fame, Class of 2019. In 1973, the duo organized a holiday in Aspen for 13 Black ski clubs; the following year they founded the National Brotherhood of Skiers, which today coordinates 54 ski clubs with more than 3,500 members. The NBS Summit drew 1,200 skiers to Snowmass, February 5-12, 2022.

Spider Sabich induction at Snowmass

In 2021, record donations and a generous bequest put ISHA on solid ground.

For the eighth year in a row, donors to the nonprofit International Skiing History Association (ISHA) set a record for charitable giving in support of our mission. Thanks to the ISHA membership, individual donations in 2021 rose 2 percent over our previous best year (2020).

The 2021 Fundraising Campaign raised a total of $145,245 in gifts from 424 individuals and families. The ISHA Board of Directors thanks Christin Cooper and John McMurtry for leading the annual drive, and all those who participated so enthusiastically..

Sixty-two companies and organizations contributed

$53,350 in corporate sponsorships, up nearly 1 percent over the record year in 2019. Total unrestricted donations and sponsorships rose 15 percent over the Covid year of 2020.

In addition, ISHA received a substantial bequest from the Richard and Georgette Bohr Trust, totaling $292,000.

In 2021, membership dues covered about 18.2 percent of ISHA’s annual costs for publishing the magazine, maintaining the website, producing the annual ISHA Awards program and maintaining communications with the membership. The balance of the budget was met through charitable contributions, corporate sponsorships and bulk sales of the magazine to our museum partners. It was not necessary in 2021 to draw on investment funds.

On the expense side of the ledger, 63 percent of the budget went to support ISHA programs (magazine and website publishing, and the awards program). The remainder went to administration (member service, bookkeeping and audit, fundraising and member recruitment). ISHA incurred unusual, one-time tax-accounting costs due to Covid-related delays by the Internal Revenue Service in finalizing our transition from private to public charity status. On the other hand, for the second year in a row, expenses related to live events were greatly reduced, due to Covid-caused cancellations.

ISHA is a 501(c)(3) public charity, eligible to receive grants from family and community foundations, donor-advised funds and corporate-matching programs, in addition to direct contributions from individuals.

If you’re interested in supporting a specific ISHA program, please contact president Seth Masia at (303) 594-1657. If your firm would like to be a corporate sponsor, contact Peter Kirkpatrick at (541) 488-1933.

Please join us for Skiing History Week in Sun Valley, March 23-26!

Since 1993, Skiing History Week has been the high point of ISHA’s year—a chance for members to ski together and celebrate the traditions and culture of our sport. For the past decade the History Week events have been held in partnership with the U.S. Ski & Snowboard Hall of Fame.

This year, ISHA honors Jeff Leich, retiring executive director of the New England Ski Museum, with a Lifetime Achievement Award. For the list of award-winning books and films for 2022, go to skiinghistory.org/annual-award-archive.

For ISHA Banquet tickets, and information on discount lodging and lift passes, see skiinghistory.org/events. For Hall of Fame tickets, go to skihall.com/induction/tickets/

ISHA directors and staff will attend the New England Ski Museum’s Hannes Schneider Cup race in North Conway, New Hampshire, on March 5, and the Hall of Fame’s Eastern Induction Banquet at Bretton Woods that same evening. Please look for us!

2021 Fundraising Success

As 2021 drew to a close, ISHA members and corporate sponsors stepped up with generous contributions to another successful annual fundraising drive. More than 400 individual donors and foundations, and 61 corporate sponsors, helped ISHA to meet its revenue targets for the year. Membership dues cover only about 20 percent of ISHA’s costs to publish Skiing History magazine, produce the annual ISHA Awards program, recruit new ISHA members and continually expand the content of the website skiinghistory.org. Your tax-deductible donations make all the difference.

ISHA’s schedule includes the John Fry Lecture evening on Wednesday, March 23; a Retro Ski Day and Roundhouse Luncheon on Thursday, March 24, follow by a reception and Awards Banquet that evening; and an Historians’ Colloquium on Friday morning, March 25. In addition, ISHA will host a ski film festival at the Sun Valley Opera House. For schedule details, discount room and lift rates, and to purchase tickets to the ISHA Banquet, go to skiinghistory.org/events. Find tickets to all Hall of Fame events at skihall.com/induction/.

Sun Valley requires that masks be worn indoors. In addition, both ISHA and the Hall of Fame will require proof of Covid19 vaccination for admission to banquets and other indoor events.

ISHA Fundraising: Year-end Giving and Tax Planning

At the end of October, ISHA’s generous donors had reached 52 percent of our fundraising goal for 2021—typical for this point in our annual year-end campaign. Member dues provide about 20 percent of the revenue needed to produce, print and mail Skiing History magazine, conduct the annual Awards Program and maintain the website skiinghistory.org. The balance of revenue comes from tax-deductible individual donations, corporate sponsorships and income from endowment-fund investments. Contributions may be tax deductible regardless of whether you itemize or take standard deductions, and gifts of appreciated stock may incur tax advantages. Please consult your tax adviser.

Check Your Mailing Label!

If the mailing label on your copy of Skiing History magazine bears the word AUTO, it means that you are enrolled in ISHA’s Auto-Renew Program. If that’s the case, you need take no action regarding membership renewal—that will happen automatically, and we will NOT send a membership renewal reminder. If your mailing label does NOT show the word AUTO, it means that your membership will expire on the date shown on the label, and we’ll send a renewal notice with the magazine one issue ahead of expiration.

Because of Covid-19-related event cancellations, the U.S. Ski and Snowboard Hall of Fame will induct its Class of 2021 in the spring of 2023 at Big Sky, Montana. The Classes of 2019 and 2020 will be inducted at Sun Valley on March 27.

The Class of 2021:

Sven Coomer

Sven Coomer made plastic boots comfortable and skiable. At age 16, Sven was the youngest Olympian at the 1956 Summer Games. He studied product engineering in Sweden and consulted on athletic shoe design for Puma. He became an influential ski instructor before joining Nordica in 1968, where he drove boot design and created the pattern for race boots still in production after 50 years.

Herman Dupré

Herman Dupré grew up at Seven Springs Resort in Pennsylvania, founded by his parents in 1937. After building his own rope tows and chairlifts, and after much experimentation, in 1960 he built the resort’s first snowmaking system. Eventually he held 34 patents for his HKD snowmaking products, including innovative low-pressure systems that were widely adopted across the resort industry. Herman died in April 2020.

John Eaves

John Eaves stunt-doubled as James Bond in “A View to a Kill” and starred in the classic Willy Bogner film “Fire and Ice,” then went on to a career as a cameraman. On the pro freestyle circuit of the 1970s he scored dozens of victories in aerials, ballet and moguls and was three-time aerial and overall World Freestyle Champion; in 1980, the first year of the FIS Freestyle World Cup, he was aerials champion.

Dave and Renie
Gorsuch

Dave and Renie Gorsuch competed at the 1960 Squaw Valley Olympics and, after marrying, established leading ski retail stores-first in Gunnison and Crested Butte, then in Vail, Aspen, Snowmass, Beaver Creek and Park City, serving a worldwide customer base. The couple have been effective leaders and philanthropists in their communities, helping to develop hospitals, schools, museums and other institutions. Dave died in June, 2021.

Peter Graves

Peter Graves is an American television sportscaster and public address announcer specializing in Olympic, lifestyle and action sports. He covered 11 Olympic Games and become the voice of Nordic skiing at U.S. World Cup events and the American Birkebeiner cross-country ski race from 1977 to 1985.

Mike Hattrup

Mike Hattrup was named to the U.S. Freestyle Mogul Team in 1987, missing a chance to ski on the World Cup due to injury. He skied in numerous ski films, including the most important ski movie of his generation, Greg Stump’s The Blizzard of Aahhhs. Mike was named by Powder magazine in 1998 as one of the “50 Best Skiers in North America” and in 2006 as one of the “48 Most Influential Skiers of Our Time.”

Jan Reynolds

Jan Reynolds elevated extreme ski mountaineering as a sport worldwide. In 1980 she skied from the summit of Mustagata in the Pamirs, setting a high-altitude skiing record for women that held for a decade. Esquire Magazine selected Jan as “Athlete of the Decade” for her grueling first descents in winter during the Everest Grand Circle expedition of 1981-82, and her performance as a member of the U.S. Biathlon Team during the inaugural seasons of the women’s biathlon World Cup (1983-84).

Alan Schoenberger

Pro freestyler Alan Schoenberger won the world ballet championship and 14 first or second place freestyle podiums. To bring skiing to live theater, he created SkiBed, enabling skiing on stage. Beginning in 1978 he launched seven touring productions, with 1,250 performances, including appearances with the Rochester Philharmonic Orchestra, at the 1994 World Cup Finals in Vail and 75 performances during the 2002 Salt Lake Olympics.

Dick and Georgette Bohr Bequest

Dick Bohr (above, left), founder of the Ski Haus in Cleveland, CFO of the original Vail Associates and a FIS Nordic official, died in 2018 at age 97. With his wife, Georgette (above, right), Dick was a long-time member and promoter of ISHA. Georgette died in 2019. The couple left a generous unrestricted bequest to ISHA via the Richard and Georgette Bohr Trust. The Bohr fund and the revenue it produces will support ISHA’s mission: publishing Skiing History magazine and skiinghistory.org, the annual ISHA Awards, and future archiving, research and outreach initiatives.

On a personal note, Dick hired me at the Ski Haus in 1970. It was my first job in skiing. I learned to fit boots, adjust bindings, repair skis, write advertising copy and sell, sell, sell. Dick was a generous mentor, and I treasure his memory. –Seth Masia

Fundraiser kickoff

On behalf of the staff and board, I want to thank ISHA’s members for your generous support through this difficult past year. At this time a year ago, we had no idea how the Covid-19 pandemic would affect our lives, let alone the 2020-21 ski season. We did know that many of our sponsors and donors had not yet recovered from the shutdowns of March 2020. When we asked for support to continue publishing the magazine, you responded wholeheartedly. Individual donations from readers like you kept ISHA solvent. We were able to operate on our normal schedule, aside from live events.

We were forced to cancel the springtime Skiing History Weeks in 2020 and 2021. In both years, we presented the annual ISHA Awards with online ceremonies. Skiing History Week will resume in Sun Valley, with the Awards Banquet to be held March 24, 2022.

As we embark on the 2021 year-end fundraising campaign, please remember that ISHA runs on the passion and commitment of its members, but also on this community’s willingness to offer financial support. In 2020, membership dues covered just 23 percent of ISHA’s costs of publishing the magazine, maintaining the website and conducting the Awards Program. Corporate sponsors contributed 16 percent of operating funds. By far the largest contribution—59 percent—was made by Skiing History readers. Without those generous individual donations, we could not publish six issues of the magazine each year, nor maintain the vast website—which now includes an archive of the magazine’s past issues—nor produce in-person Skiing History events.

During the coming year, ISHA plans more improvements to the website, including online multimedia projects and new outreach programs to diverse audiences around the world. And, of course, we’ll continue to publish our colorful, authoritative and entertaining magazine, Skiing History. With your support, we are looking forward to a grand winter, with many more to come.

Your tax-deductible donation to the International Skiing History Association makes all the difference. Please help us to keep the work going! To give, please use the envelope bound into this magazine or visit
skiinghistory.org/donate.

Take Your Tax Deduction!

U.S. taxpayers should be aware of a federal law providing tax benefits when you support the causes you care about, including ISHA. Under the CARES Act, all taxpayers are eligible to deduct up to $300 of charitable giving ($600 for a married couple filing jointly), whether you itemize deductions or take the standard deduction. This is $300 you won’t have to pay taxes on, even if you don’t itemize. For those who do itemize deductions, the new law allows for cash contributions to qualified charities such as ISHA to be deducted up to 100 percent of your adjusted gross income for the 2021 calendar year.

For our Canadian members, friends and donors, taxation advantages may be available, and we urge you to consult with your personal tax advisor in that regard. You may also wish to refer to the following Canadian government website: https://www.canada.ca/en/revenue-agency/services/charities-giving/giving-charity-information-donors.html.
