Doug Pensinger - Photograper

Photographer Doug Pensinger, well known for his coverage of World Cup races among other sports, died of cardiac arrest in his sleep on June 10, 2016, at his home in Golden, Colorado. He was 51.

Born in Pennsylvania, Pensinger began selling photos to local newspapers at age 15. After working at Gannett’s Public Opinion in Chambersburg, Pennsylvania, he took a staff job at the Santa Barbara News Press (California), while studying at the Brooks Institute of Photography.

In Washington, D.C., he freelanced for the Washington Post, Time Mgazine, Sports Illustrated and the AP. Working for The Army Times, he covered the invasion of Panama, the first Gulf War, the civil war in Bosnia and aid missions to Somalia. Between military assignments abroad, he shot sports events for Allsport (later Getty Images), travelling to the Olympics, the Tour de France, the World Series, Super Bowls, and many World Cup races.

He is survived by his wife of 25 years, Bettyann Heppler, daughter Devan Rae Heppler Pensinger , father Thomas R. Pensinger, and sister Kim Pensinger Witman.
