George Franklin Maynard III, who managed Jiminy Peak in the Berkshires of western Massachusetts, died on November 24, 2018. He was the son of George “Doc” Maynard, who founded the legendary Greylock Ski Club in the 1930s and managed Jiminy in its early years with his wife, Dorothy “Dot” Maynard.

George Maynard III was born in 1930 in Pittsfield, Massachusetts and graduated from Pittsfield High School, where he was the captain of the ski team. He graduated from Norwich University in 1953 and married his wife, Kathryn, that same year. A Korean War veteran, he served in the SCAWAF (Special Category Army With the Air Force) in Texas and Greenland.

George worked for Lane Construction Co. building the New York State Thruway and the Massachusetts Turnpike, among other projects. He was the first town engineer for Wilmington, Massachusetts and the Public Works Director for North Reading and Agawam. In 1965 he became the first full-time manager of Jiminy Peak Ski Area, where he installed new lifts and a snowmaking system. He ran races and coached junior alpine racers for many years in the Berkshires.

He started his own engineering and surveying business in Hancock, Massachusetts and retired in 1987. After moving to northern Vermont post-retirement, he worked at Jay Peak as the lift supervisor. George is survived by his wife and three sons: Dale, Dean, and Steven.
