Sport Obermeyer executive, 40-year sales representative

 

Gary Speckmann passed away March 29 in his home in Boulder, Colorado. He was 86.

 

Gary was born in Fremont, Nebraska. The family moved to La Junta, Colorado, where Gary spent his formative years and he graduated from high school in 1950. The next year he joined the U.S. Navy and saw was stationed in Honolulu, Hawaii, and was on active duty in combat on a destroyer during the Korean War.

 

Upon his return in 1955, Gary attended the University of Colorado. After graduation he joined an accounting firm in Glenwood Springs, Colorado. Within a year, Gary was approached by Klaus Obermeyer, who was starting a small ski clothing company in Aspen called Sport Obermeyer. Gary served as vice president at Obermeyer for 11 years. Gary and his wife Nancy raised their family in Aspen until 1979, when he returned to Boulder.

 

After departing Obermeyer in 1970, he joined Spyder Activewear as their first rep, and worked there for more than a decade. He also represented Volant skis, Spademan bindings, and several other skiing-related companies in his Colorado, Utah, Wyoming and New Mexico territory. during his 40-year career.

 

Gary was an avid CU Buffs fan and he enjoyed playing baseball and softball for many years, as well as fly fishing and skiing.
