About the Author

Mort Lund Mort Lund

Morten Lund has been one of this country's outstanding ski journalists for half a century. The son of a Norwegian cross country and jumping competitor, he attended the Lake Placid Olympics with his father at age ten and grew up skiing around Augusta, Maine. After Navy service in the Pacific during WWII, he graduated from Bowdoin College in 1950, He was hired by Sports Illustrated in 1954, and was part of the SI team covering the Squaw Valley 1960 Olympics. In 1962 he joined SKI Magazine as contributing editor. There he was instrumental in introducing Clif Taylor’s Graduated Length Method of learning how to ski to the general public. He collaborated with the founder of the National Ski Patrol Minot Dole on the Dole’s biography, Adventures on Skis. He wrote, Nice Goin’, the autobiography of Friedl Pfeifer, who founded the modern ski resort of Aspen. In 1988, Lund became a contributing editor to the newly founded Snow Country, beginning with its first issue in 1994. At about the same time he also became founding editor of Skiing Heritage in its expansion from a newsletter, Snow News, to became the first U.S. nationwide ski history journal under the auspices of the International Skiing History Association. ISHA supported one of his early projects in creating the first indexes of Ski and Skiing through the years, which made possible thorough research of history as reported in these magazines’ pages. He also envisioned and founded the first two national meetings of ISHA members to give out ISHA’s first media awards, which now continues in the annual ISHA ski weeks. As a current member of ISHA’s editorial board, he critiques the contents of Skiing Heritage and still contributes articles to the journal that he founded.
