Dear Will: I loved the images of Jill. Hey, don't you know? Hardly anyone replies to these posts. I have tried to get conversations going to no avail. Check out the number of replies to the number of posts. I checked out your profile. I too used to live in the Midwest. I came west in 1969 and never went back. I currently live in Coeur d'Alene, Idaho. Tell me a bit about your connection to skiing. I will repond. Sheekski

Default Oh there is someone else here...:)

Yeah that is what I suspected... I notice a lot of hits on the YouTube links I post... but not comments...

Oh well.... I live here in iowa... and used to ski a lot of the 1960s/1970s/1980s Mom and Pop ski areas in Wisconsin, Iowa and Minnesota... And over that period got to go to Colorado to ski... And although it has been a long time since I have downhilled... I still cross-country ski during the Winter...

I am also a ski historian as a hobby and YouTube Producer... making a few skiing history YouTubes... One of which... SKIING HERITAGE... I was honored to have posted on the website of ISHA homepage for a while...

I have also been fortunite to have corresponded a few times with people from skiing history including... Dodie Gann... Andrea Mead Lawrence... Suzy Rytting... Nancy Green Raine... Jill Kinmont Boothe and even got a nice reply from a letter I wrote to Warren Miller. As well as the friendly folks at International Skiing History Association
Anyway... glad to know there is really someone out here too on this message board

Default Which Mom and Pop ski area?

Hey Will: Which Mom and Pop ski areas in the Midwest did you hit back in your resort skiing days? That's a pretty impressive list of well known skiers that you have communicated with. Best regards, SheekSki

    Default Mom and Pops:)

We hit a lot of the bigger places here like Chestnut Mountain near Galena, IL., Afton Alps near Hastings, MN.... as well as Welch Village... Mt. Frontonac... all also in MN. We also used to ski at Mt. LaCrosse near LaCrosse, Wisconsin... But here in Iowa we also used to ski Nor-Ski... which was located near Decorah, Iowa and Ski Villa... which was located near Waverly, Iowa.... both of the ones in Iowa now sadly closed...

We also went skiing once at a place called SKI PAL... which I can't remember where it was located... and a place near Harmony, MN... which I guess was built of the wrong side of the hill...?

    Default Memories...:)

Here is also a YouTube I made a while back from one day I hiked across a field while visiting Decorah, Iowa to see what was left of the ski area... NOR-SKI... that had been located there...

    Default RIP Jill Kinmont

FYI _ Jill passed away recently in Bishop. Actually, she passed in Carson City, NV, about 170 miles north of Bishop.

    Default RIP Jill Kinmont Boothe

Although I only read the book on her life... and saw both the movies... I found Jill to be a very nice person in the one telephone conversation I had with her... and in what she wrote in a reply to a letter I sent her after reading THE OTHER SIDE OF THE MOUNTAIN book...

And part of me hopes that somewhere now she stands on skis atop a perfect snowy slope on a perfect sunny day... and after adjusting her goggles as she pushes off roars...

"My name is Jill Kinmont Boothe... and I ski...!"
