ISHA honors eight writer, film-makers

For the fifteenth year, the International Skiing History Association, during its Aspen Skiing Heritage Week (March 30 – April 4), honored writers and filmmakers for their outstanding contributions to the historical record of skiing. The award winners are:

E. John B. Allen, Ullr Award, The Culture and Sport of Skiing from Antiquity to World War II. America’s ranking academic ski historian explores the theme of the nature of skiing to the end of World War II, as shaped and defined by the surrounding culture.

John Christie, Ullr Award, The Story of Sugarloaf. As former GM of Sugarloaf and a Maine Ski Hall of Famer, John has crafted a detailed, personal, visually stunning, and fast paced story of Sugarloaf’s evolution from little backwoods ski area to major resort status.

Bill Kerig, ISHA Film Award, Steep (Original Story). As one of a new breed of documentarians, Bill is the driving force behind this visual stunning (high definition), personal, thrilling, and poignant history of big mountain, extreme skiing.

Rick Moulton, ISHA Film Award, Ski Sentinels, The Story of the National Ski Patrol. This veteran ski history filmmaker presents a rich combination of antique footage and interviews to document the success of the NSP, including its volunteer origins and professional evolution.

Byron Rempel, Ullr Award, No Limits: the Amazing Life of Rhoda and Rhona Wurtle, Canada’s Olympic Skiing Pioneers. This well-researched book chronicles the extended lives in skiing of the Wurtle twins in the 1940’s and 1950’s, beginning with their competitive debut at the 1942 Taschereau Race on Mt. Tremblant.

Greg Stump, ISHA Film Award, Lifetime Achievement. Greg’s thirty-five years of ground-breaking extreme skiing film accomplishments helped shape the modern ski film genre. His work includes Time Waits for Snowman, The Maltese Flamingo, The Good, the Rad and the Gnarly, and The Blizzard of Aahhh’s.

Ingrid Wicken, Skade Award, Skiing in Southern California. Receiving her second ISHA award, Ingrid uses antique pictures, lively captions, and short text blocks to visually communicate Southern California’s pioneering alpine skiing origins going back to the 1920’s and 1930’s.

Federation Internationale de Ski, Ullr Award, Skiing in Fine Arts, edited by Gunter Witt. This beautifully illustrated book contains a far ranging selection of reproductions of paintings, photographs, sculptures, and cartoon from the Victorian era through a veritable rainbow of modern works of art.
